In past and present, Imperial Landing has always been a centre of activity whether it be commercial or residential. This waterfront locale has undergone a remarkable evolution from busy fishing cannery district to one of Richmond’s most sought-after residential areas.

In 1893, Imperial Cannery was constructed at the south east end of No. 1 Rd alongside the Fraser River. It operated as a powerhouse in the local canning industry from 1903 all the way to 1992. It was, in fact, the last cannery to can salmon on the shores of Steveston.

When the cannery did finally cease operation in 1992, Steveston’s desirability was already well-recognized within the residential and commercial development industries. The small-town charm, rich historical roots, waterfront focus and access to recreational amenities provided an exceptional offering for potential residents and businesses alike. Realizing the growing demand for this area, the Imperial Cannery site was sold to local real estate developers in 2001. After carefully crafting a thoughtful master plan layout for the area, construction began on 505 low-rise condos, 175 townhouses and 69 single-family homes.

Often dubbed ‘Richmond’s Kitsilano’, this is a neighborhood unto it’s own. Designed with a conscious effort to reference the areas’s commercial roots, each building showcases timeless architecture, exceptional design and quality finishings. Imperial Landing offers a variety of product types from high-end 4-storey condominiums to small single family homes (30’ x 33’ frontage lots). As this area is one of the newer developments in Steveston, units here are typically smaller than other areas of the Village but generally have a higher-end spec, generous outdoor living spaces and are closer in proximity to the Village and its amenities. The wide range of housing options typically appeals to single professionals, start-up families and empty-nesters. The resort-like feel of the neighorbood is created by lush green spaces, an expansive waterfront boardwalk and access to recreation amenities including; the Richmond Dyke Trail system, river kayaking, cycling trails, Steveston Community Centre & Park and the Steveston Outdoor Pool.

So, while you may find a few a more lattes (yes, there is a Starbucks), yuppies and yogis in this ‘hood, it is an ideal location for active individuals who want to be close to local amenities. Big dogs are welcome, prices are wayyy more reasonable than Kitsilano and Lululemon is optional!
